Artesanas De Chuchipaca Group's story

Thirty-nine-year-old María is a teacher who lives in the department/state of Quiché. She is a member, along with 6 other K'iche' women, of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Artesanas de Chuchipaca." Because of a lack of teaching jobs, María opened a convenience store in order to raise her 4 children, who are between 3 months to 17 years. Because it is a challenge to provide an education for her older children and save for the younger ones, María also sells traditional clothing in her store. She is requesting a Kiva loan to buy dairy products, basic grains, shelves, and traditional clothing.

The "Artesanas de Chuchipaca" are requesting their third Kiva loan in order to invest in their convenience stores, as well as traditional clothing stores that feature embroidered and hand-knit items. The women meet each month to make loan payments and then participate in beneficial educational trainings that are a part of the "Microcredit Plus" program of small loans, business management, and healthcare services. Maria and her friends learn how to manage their businesses intelligently and invest wisely. They also learn about nutrition, and the use of medicinal plants, as well as how to develop self-esteem, which leads to empowerment.

María and her friends are very grateful to Kiva investors for their support which enables them to have brighter futures. Thank you!!!
