A loan helped to purchase more rice, chicken, meat and green bananas.

Judith's story

Judith is 21 years old and lives in the town of Kaliro in the Iganga region of Uganda. For the past six years Judith has been working hard to manage her restaurant which sells cooked food like rice, meat, chicken and green bananas.

To help expand her business, Judith has requested a loan of 1,400,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more rice, chicken, meat and green bananas, and will help Judith to generate greater profits. Judith will use the profits of the business to pay school fees for her siblings, buy herself personal items like shoes, pay house bills and provide basic needs for the family, like food, thereby improving on their standards of living. Judith hopes that in the future she will be able to buy cows and goats for rearing.

Judith is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
