A loan helped to reforest a pine forest to harvest resin.

Cerro Viejo Group's story

A lack of jobs, migration, scarce financial resources, forest fires, and unrestrained tree felling have been devastating to financial stagnation for the residents of Ucareo, Michoacán, Mexico, a small place where Francisco is from. He's an older man, 71, who works daily with his group to not decline in the face of these situations. He believes firmly that the land should be restored to offer security to future generations.

Francisco thinks that "if we all take care of our land and reforest our woods, we will have job sources again, the climate will improve, we'll be able to take much more advantage of the resources that nature offers us, and we'll have opportunities for growth that will keep our children and grandchildren from having to emigrate in search of better living conditions."

He and his group are working to have a productive forest. Even though they work hard, they need a bit of extra help to enable them to have all the supplies they need to ensure the success of their farm. They're enthusiastic, and for them Kiva means the possibility of achieving their goal.
