A loan helped Additional working capital to purchase stocks for her canteen.

Leonila's story

Leonila M., of Teresa, Rizal Province in the Philippines. is a 40-year-old mother of two boys, both college students. A strong and courageous mother, she is married to Edilberto, a 41-year-old caretaker. She and her husband are active church members in their village.

As a woman of dreams, in 2005 she joined ASHI (Ahon Sa Hirap, Inc.), a Microfinance Institution and KIVA partner in the Philippines. Since then, Leonila started a canteen (outdoor café) business that has really helped the family meet its educational and living expenses. Her previous loan played an important role in developing the business and subsequent increased business profits permitted the purchase of a motorcycle. Now she is requesting a new loan of 45,000 pesos as additional working capital to purchase more stocks for her canteen.

Leonila hopes that, with the help of ASHI and KIVA, she can achieve her main dream in life: sending her children to school until they find jobs. Leonila also extends her helping hand to her niece and nephew to bring them to school and make education their priority. She also dreams of a successful business, and even plans to have an Internet cafe in the future. Now, she says, her dreams are nearly within her reach.
