Arlene's story

Arlene A. is a woman of courage to battle challenges in order to achieve her goals in life. She is 46 years old and married to Virgilio, 46, who is a fisherman. She is a caring mother of two children who are both of minor age. She lives in the coastal place of Talim Island, town of Binangonan, Rizal Province, in the Philippines. In 2007, she joined ASHI (Ahon SA Hirap, Inc.), an MFI and Kiva partner in the Philippines, with an opportunity of having start-up funds for generating income. Since she received loans from ASHI, she carefully invested it in her fishing business and it gave her reasonable earnings. Now on her fourth loan, she requests 20,000 Philippine pesos for additional working capital for her fishing business. Specifically, the amount will be used to purchase a fishnet, rope, bamboo, fingerlings (young or very small fish) and labor expenses. She also plans to buy one motorboat to consistently visit their fish pond. As a mother, Arlene dreams of sending her two children to school and on to completing college degrees and finding jobs for healthier lives. She also enjoys considering that the loan from ASHI will change their lives and provide her family's needs. She also dreams of building a big house for her family to live in.
