A loan helped to purchase farm inputs, such as fertilizer and seeds, to boost her crop yields and improve her sales, so that she can earn enough money to educate her children.

Edith's story

As the world celebrates women in March, Kiva lenders have joined in to transform lives.

Meet Edith, a hard-working farmer from a remote village in the Machakos area of Kenya. She is able to care for her family as the sole breadwinner. She is not deterred by the difficult life situations that she has been through. Edith has a farm where she grows crops and raises livestock. She also earns some income from a personal business. She never had a formal education and is content with the farming lifestyle.

The Machakos area is favorable for farming, so Edith is seeking a 50,000 KES loan through Kiva's field partner, Juhudi Kilimo, to purchase farm inputs (fertilizer and seed) to boost her yields and improve her sales, so that she can earn enough money to educate her children. Being a rural mom and accessing funds in Kenya, especially around Machakos, is very challenging. However, Edith feels relieved knowing there are institutions such as Kiva that help enterprising women like her.

She is always working to improve her living conditions. Her biggest dream is to become independent and support her aging parents, secure her children’s future, and buy a home. Kindly lend to this hardworking mom!
