A loan helped to buy seeds, fertilizer, insecticides, posts and drip irrigation supplies.

Mujeres Kaqchikeles Sumpango Group's story

The President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Kaqchikeles Sumpango” is 24-year-old Telma who is a married mother of 2 children (2 mo. and 7 yrs). She is a hard-working farmer who grows beans, chiles, squash and tomatoes. With the income from her harvest, Telma helps with the household expenses.

Currently, she is requesting a Kiva loan to buy seeds, fertilizer, insecticides, posts, and drip irrigation supplies. Receiving this Kiva loan at this time will really help Telma a great deal, because it is almost time to plant her field. She is eager to succeed!

Telma calls the monthly meetings to order and the ladies make prompt payments on their loans. Then, a Facilitator from Friendship Bridge shares an educational training with them that helps them with their businesses (animal husbandry, convenience stores, farming), their families (health, hygiene, nutrition) and themselves (self-esteem, empowerment, women’s roles/rights). This beneficial combination of loans, education and healthcare services is called “Microcredit Plus”. Telma adds, “We have little formal education and we want to be successful, productive and healthy women!”

Thank you, Kiva investors, for providing much-needed loan support for Telma and her friends! They would be unable to walk into a bank to secure a loan.
