A loan helped our restaurant & community space move past its start up phase by providing essential resources to help us grow!
I grew up in the small town of Milton, WI not far from where I live now in Middleton. I had a typical midwest upbringing of long winters and hot summers, grueling school days and not a heck of a lot going on otherwise. As far back as I can remember, I have had this aching feeling of restlessness, like there was something I was supposed to be doing. A certain task I was supposed to be fulfilling. I bounced around from various hobbies & interests- many I still hold onto today. Writing, music, travel, art & various lines of employment. But none of them, not a one- came close to silencing this restlessness inside me. It wasn't until I was well into adulthood, a bit wiser, and thankfully not too weathered, that I started to narrow in on this restless passenger that had eventually quieted but never disappeared. Deep in the mundanity of adulthood I decided to start a writers group to try & keep my brain active amongst the humdrums & ho-hums of every day life. I planned regular meetings & workshops (that people actually attended & enjoyed!) & before I realized what was happening I had discovered it was my love of bringing people together that put my restlessness to rest. My community organizing didn’t stop there. I branched out to all areas that pertained to me at the time- parent groups, music gatherings, community dinners. The more I brought people together, the more ideas I had. The only thing that was holding me back much of the time was simply a place for which to gather when someones 200 square foot living room couldn’t suffice. And this is how the idea of Common Ground was born.
