Biolite's story

This loan may have a higher risk but higher impact. Learn more here. Problem Access to electricity is limited or non-existent for more than 1.1 billion people. As a result, families living in rural, off-grid environments are forced to pay disproportionate amounts of their incomes to purchase dirty and expensive kerosene lamps for lighting. Additionally, while mobile phone usage in rural, off-grid households is growing rapidly, locating reliable electricity for charging remains elusive and expensive. Solution Similar to how mobile phones revolutionized the telecommunications industry in emerging markets, BioLite’s products replace outdated infrastructure with affordable and modern solutions that transform energy access in the home: watch their video here. This is BioLite’s second Kiva loan. Since their first Kiva loan, they have more than quadrupled their sales by scaling the solar-powered SolarHome lighting & charging system along with the HomeStove cookstove. Thanks to Kiva's support, BioLite’s SolarHome has become the fastest scaling solar home system in Sub-Saharan Africa with over 60,000 units sold in 2018 alone. BioLite aims to keep pace with this demand by bringing on a variety of new distribution partners to enhance their social impact. Loan Use This loan will allow BioLite to provide the solar-powered SolarHome lighting & charging home systems and HomeStove cookstoves to low income families on credit. Furthermore, it will allow BioLite to expand sales in current markets - Kenya and Uganda - as well as novel markets including Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, Malawi, Ethiopia, and Rwanda.
