Katherine's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!
A loan helped to fund the expansion of our store by paying for new inventory and helping to upgrade our point of sale system.
I was born and raised in Long Beach and this city is a really important part of my DNA. My parents were raised here, my uncle writes for the paper here, my great grandfather even had a tuxedo shop a few doors down from where my shop is now. After highschool I attended Long Beach City College and then got a degree in Fashion Design from FIDM. I began working as an assistant designer after graduation and eventually moved out of design and into buying. I spent the bulk of my career buying for PacSun and then Torrid. I always knew that I wanted to own my own store so I learned everything I could about the business from visual merchandising to logistics. I started Sister as a side hustle with an online shop and pop ups in June 2016. In February 2017 I decided to quit my job and do Sister full time. I spent 2 months working my day job and getting Sister ready to open at night. Family and friends stamped bags and steamed clothes for weeks. My last day in the corporate world was my opening night here at the shop. I was completely exhausted but it was one of the best nights of my life. I still can’t believe how lucky I am to live my dream. I now teach in the fashion department at LBCC and have created an internship program using Sister as a live classroom. So far I have worked with 11 girls, all fashion students interested in careers in buying. A few of them are now employees and I continue to mentor others. In addition to growing Sister, I hope to eventually have a small agency to help connect them to a network of supportive women and careers that they love.
