A loan helped to buy patterns, thread and fabric for her textiles.

Flor De Paz Group's story

“Flor de Paz” or “Flower of Peace” is the name that 7 ladies, who live in the picturesque department/state of Solola, have given to to their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank. As many travelers from throughout the world visit the magnificent Lake Atitlan and the 3 towering volcanoes that surround the lake, these women sell their colorful embroidered traditional textiles, flavorful snack type foods and refreshing drinks to tourists. They are beginning their 4th KIVA loan cycle.

The women meet monthly to make loan payments and to participate in educational trainings, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and healthcare services. One of them is 27 year old Francisca who is married with a 5th grade education. She has a traditional textile business and embroiders (cross stitch) elegant blouses. Francisca is planning for the future when she will have children and is concerned about the condition of the roof of her home. She is setting aside some of her income to replace her roof with one that is stronger and more stable. Francisca is requesting a KIVA loan to buy patterns, thread and fabric for her textiles.

As Francisca and her friends have little or no formal education, they benefit greatly from their monthly educational sessions that deal with an aspect of 4 main topics: business, health, family, and women. A facilitator, using pictures, diagrams, role playing and games shares the information. The women are eager to learn!

Thank you, KIVA investors!
