A loan helped to buy a large quantity of chickens at the wholesale level.

El Establo Group's story

The President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “El Establo” is 41-year-old Elvira who lives in the department/state of Retalhuleu. She is married with 7 children who range in age from 8-25 years old. Elvira has a 5th grade education. She has worked hard at her chicken business so that all her children can go to elementary and secondary schools.

By the pound, she sells butchered chicken from her home. The business is popular and it is time for Elvira to buy more chicken. She is requesting a Kiva loan to buy a large quantity of chickens at the wholesale level.

This is the 1st Kiva loan cycle for the 9 ladies in the Trust Bank. They sell chickens, tortillas, drinks and delicious regional dishes. A few have convenience stores. They learn to manage their loans through the monthly educational trainings when they learn about an aspect of 4 topics: business, health, family, women. Bolstered by what they learn, they are able to make wiser decisions about planning, budgeting, investing and savings. They are also able to understand the importance of good nutrition, proper hygiene, and healthy habits. In the process, they gain self esteem, confidence and they empower themselves. Friendship Bridge calls the effective combination of loans, education and healthcare services “Microcredit Plus” and it works!

Elvira and her friends send their deep gratitude to Kiva investors from all parts of the world who fund their loans. Thank you to each of you for being generous!
