Power Control Limited's story

This loan may have a higher risk but higher impact. Learn more here. The Problem Over 90% of rural, farming households in Tanzania have no access to utility power. This means that farmers can spend over 50% of their yearly income on forms of energy and lighting that are expensive, unhealthy and unsafe. This is especially problematic because farmers have very little disposable income to buy clean energy solutions and they cannot afford the upfront cost. The Solution Power Control Limited is an established supplier of renewable energy in Tanzania. RISE (Rural Initiative for Sustainable Enterprise) is an initiative of Power Control Limited that supplies Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) solar home systems for farmers that are IFC/World Bank approved and include mobile charging, a radio and come with a 24-month warranty. The PAYG systems allow farmers to pay for their clean energy systems in small affordable installments providing greater accessibility and affordability. The Loan Use A Kiva loan of USD 50,000 will allow the RISE initiative of Power Control Limited to purchase over 650 PAYG solar home systems which will be sold primarily to cocoa farmers in Kyela region, in the South of Tanzania. This will provide energy access to almost 3000 people and get 650 households onto the energy ladder.
