Perlas Divinas Group's story

The President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Perlas Divinas” or “Divine Pearls” is 45-year-old Paulina. She has a sixth grade education, and is married and the mother of four children (13-23). Because of her work ethic, they all attend currently attend high school. Her husband is a musician and doesn’t make enough to support the family. Paulina sells traditional blouses that she sews on a sewing machine. End of the year parties, holidays, and graduations are coming and Paulina needs to buy raw materials. She is requesting a Kiva loan to buy fabric and trimmings/decor.

There are seven Maya Tz'utujil women in the group who live in a town on the shores of the magnificent Lake Atitlan that is surrounded by three majestic volcanoes. Their businesses range from the sales of delicious foods to the fabrication/sales of colorful traditional textiles. This is the beginning of their third Kiva loan cycle. They learn to manage their loans effectively with the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, educational trainings, and healthcare services. In their monthly trainings, they learn to budget, to plan, to invest, and to save. They also learn how to care for their families effectively with information about health, hygiene, nutrition, and the use of medicinal plants. The ladies also learn about self esteem and empowerment.

It would be impossible for them to walk into a bank to secure a loan. Kiva investors are vital to their success. Thank you!
