La Nueva Meta Group's story

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “La Nueva Meta” or “The New Goal” is made up of 10 women who have the goals of bolstering their businesses, educating their children, raising their standard of living and empowering themselves. They can achieve these goals with the “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge that combines monthly educational trainings with loan support (often supplied by KIVA investors) and healthcare services. The trainings cover an aspect of 4 main topics: business, health, women, families.

These Maya K’iche women live in a rural area in the department/state of Quiche. They use their loans in their businesses that include traditional textile production, bean farms and animal husbandry (chickens, livestock). They learn to plan, budget, invest and save at their monthly meetings and are motivated to succeed.

Glenda, a member of the group with 3 years of formal education, was elected Treasurer of the group. She is 33 years old and wants her 3 children (5,7,9) to have a complete education and has set aside funds from weaving traditional colorful wrap around skirts or “cortes”. She has a small workshop where she, her husband and father work on 3 floor looms making 3 cortes each week.

She is requesting a KIVA loan to buy an additional loom with the necessary tools, as well as thread/yarn. She wants to increase both production, sales and income.

Thank you, KIVA investors, for reaching out to Glenda and her friends and for funding their much needed loans!
