Arturo's story

As a first generation Mexican-American, I’ve seen my immigrant parents make a future for our family by seizing opportunities and working hard. When I finished high school my father believed that going to college was going to be the way for me to make a good living beyond the chances he had had. So, I moved to Long Beach with my older brother and tried going to college like my dad had wanted me to. Long Beach had always been a second home to me: growing up, my family would frequent the city to visit relatives. School didn’t work out, but living with my brother at that time had a huge and positive impact on my life in unexpected ways: I was introduced to many musicians, artists, gardeners, activists, and small business owners that deeply inspired me. This is where my passion for local, organic, and artisan foods began. I got involved in community organizing, started shopping at farmers markets, and learned to cook with new seasonal ingredients. In the summer of 2013, I baked my first loaves of bread in a wood-fired oven and completely fell in love. It was then that I knew I wanted to this to be my life. I started baking every week and providing loaves to friends, slowly growing my experience, knowledge and passion until I was able to set up my cottage bakery. When I told my parents about my passion and vision to have my own bakery they fully supported me and gave me my first loan. Tradition, family, friends, nourishment: these are my inspirations in business and in life. All my efforts go toward building a bakery that is a warm, welcoming, and safe place for community and nourishment known for the commitment and honoring of traditional quality foods.
