Girasoles De Xeatzan Group's story

Eleven Maya Kaqchikel women who live in the department/state of Chimaltenango, gratefully participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program of Friendship Bridge. They have formed the Trust Bank “Girasoles de Xeatzan” or “Sunflowers of Xeatzan” and meet monthly to make their loan payments. They invest capital into their farming (broccoli, snow peas), animal husbandry, and traditional handicraft/textile businesses. They learn how to manage their loans with the monthly educational trainings about business, health, women and family. This month, they are learning about women’s rights, preventing violence against women and how to make good decisions about a variety of topics. This is their very 1st KIVA loan!

Marisol, a 24 year old married member of the group, is one of the few who was able to go to school and has a teaching certificate. She works part time as an educator, teaching rural women to read and write. In order to increase her income, she has a convenience store, raises animals and weaves colorful traditional blouses, or “huipiles”. Marisol is a great example of an empowered business woman! She is currently requesting a KIVA loan to invest as follows: 50% to restock the shelves of her store, 25% to buy chickens and 25% to buy various colors of high quality thread.

It would be impossible for Marisol and her friends to walk into a bank to secure a loan. KIVA investors are very much appreciated for their generosity in funding these essential loans. Thank you!
