A loan helped a minority and woman-owned small business replace purchase inventory, replace equipment, and hire a new employee.
I was born in Dakar, Senegal and immigrated to New York in 1991 to join my kid's father. My mother, who was a housewife, was always involved into her own small businesses - knitting and commerce. Growing up I always helped her with the operations and that put the entrepreneurial spirit in me. Watching her tend to me and my siblings while at the same time having something of her own apart from my father’s income encouraged me to pursue my own business once migrating to the United States. After working at a local supermarket for a few weeks, I soon learned that majority of West African women work in hair salons. After shadowing a hair mastermind, Khady Rasta, I soon began to grow a passion for doing hair in particular Flat Twist, my specialty. Today, after owning my at-home business and moving to my current location of 13 years I want to continue by business and keep it alive. Having a small owned minority business in Harlem is a challenge specially with all of the changes in the neighborhood but it's a challenge that I am excited to take on every day I enter the two doors of my hair salon.
