Lucy's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to buy a biodigester to turn her farm waste into resources to expand her milk production.

Lucy's story

Lucy lives in the rural region of Gatundu North, Kenya. Her dream is to create a cost-effective, sustainable dairy farm through conversion of animal manure into methane-rich biogas that will be a source of income that supports her household.

She is currently spending too much money on fossil fuels (propane), wood, and LP gas, which is required to heat the milk produced by her cows for pasteurization. With the Sistema bio biodigester, Lucy will reduce her reliance on expensive and non-renewable LP gas and agrochemical fertilizers by processing the manure from her four dairy cows to produce biogas and biofertilizer, which is both economic and environmental-friendly. This loan will help her to install a twenty-cubic-meter biodigester that will pay for itself after an average of two years.

The resulting reduction in operating costs will allow her to deal better with fluctuating and unpredictable milk prices. It also will make it easier for Lucy to increase her corn, vegetables, and forage production while at the same time expanding her milk production.

This loan represents 64% of the total cost of the biodigester; the remaining part is paid directly by Lucy.
