A loan helped build a new greenhouse to grow our business.

Pavel's story

Pavel’s first taste of gardening was as a child in Russia at his family’s country dacha. He was tasked with jobs such as picking berries, harvesting potatoes and double digging garden beds. It wasn’t until 2006 that Pavel began studying farming as a career. Katie got her start in gardening by WWOOFing on a small organic farm in the South Island of New Zealand. In 2011, Katie joined Pavel's Garden, and she has been learning and enjoying the spoils ever since. Her main inspiration from the garden is cooking and preparing the many vegetables. Katie’s passion is in fiber arts and teaching. She combines her love of fiber and gardening by exploring natural dyes to use in her classes at the University of Louisville and Waldorf School of Louisville. The rich soil of Oldham County, Kentucky is the backbone of our garden. We lease land from Foxhollow Farm – a thriving biodynamic grass fed beef farm. The goal of our garden is to supply fresh, healthy and delicious produce to our community year round. We do this by using natural growing methods and avoiding conventional fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides. The fertility for our vegetables comes from the farm-made compost and green manuring (aka cover cropping). We rotate our crops to avoid the spread of disease and pests. We grow as rich a diversity of plants as we can to help ensure a thriving ecosystem, and we employ minimal tillage techniques whenever possible.
