Mujeres Tejedoras Group's story

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Tejedoras” or “Weaving Women” was organized by seven Maya K’iche ladies in the department/state of Quiche. It is important for them to retain their native language and teach their children to speak Maya K’iche so that the culture and traditions will continue as they have for centuries.

The women have an average of two years of formal education, so their monthly educational trainings are critical to their success. A facilitator from the organization teaches them how to manage their businesses effectively (budgeting, planning, investing, savings), and care for their families (nutrition, hygiene, health). They also receive healthcare services. Microcredit Plus is the name of this program.

This is the first Kiva loan cycle for these ladies and they would like to invest the funds into their farms (peaches, avocados) and traditional textile businesses.

Josefina, a member of the group, is a single 27-year-old woman who weaves colorful belts on a backstrap loom. She has four employees who weave 28 belts each month. Orders are increasing and Josefina needs more supplies. She is requesting a Kiva loan to buy very high quality thread in 11 colors at the wholesale level.

Josefina and her friends are poised to step into a brighter and more prosperous future. They appreciate the partnership between Kiva and Friendship Bridge. Thank you, Kiva lenders!
