Gema Monserrate's story

The city of Portoviejo was affected by the earthquake of April 16, 2016. The city produces garden vegetables, beans and tropical fruits for local consumption. Gema, 29, is married with a four-year-old daughter. Her husband is a public employee. They live in a rental home.

Gema prepares lunches in her house to sell from Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM until 1:00 PM. She also makes deliveries, and does decorating work for social events in venues, private homes or wherever she is asked, generally on the weekends. She sells clothing, shoes, handbags and perfumes which she purchases on the internet from the United States, and when they arrive she goes out to deliver them or sells them from her home since many products are ordered, she has been running this business for over six years. With this loan she will purchase curtains, cake pedestals, clothing, shoes, and ingredients to continue preparing meals. Her dream is to have her own venue for social events.
