A loan helped to buy assorted drinks and pure water for resale.

Mariatu's story

Greetings from Sierra Leone, Wilberforce - a community near the small, busy western area in Freetown.

This is 42-year-old Mariatu, a married mother and business woman. She has three children between the ages of 10 and 22 years. She started this business to improve her standard of living and create an income to take care of her family.

Mariatu sells cigarettes, assorted drinks, and pure water. Seemingly distinct businesses are often mixed in Sierra Leone, the idea being that a customer will come to purchase one thing but will leave having purchased another. Mariatu has been doing this business since 2000. Mariatu desires to empower her life. Mariatu works 6 days a week and 12 hours per day. She likes the fact that she continues to have new customers and has kept the old ones.

Mariatu wants to use this loan to buy assorted drinks and pure water for resale. Mariatu would like to open a big shop. She really wants to improve her life and is grateful to BRAC Sierra Leone and the Kiva community for their financial support.
