Las Rosas De Chicaman Group's story

The Guatemalan Department of Quiché is an area of diverse landscapes - mountains to flatlands. It is a region rich in indigenous ethnic cultures, such as K'iche', Q'eqchi' and Poqomchí. The predominant languages are Spanish and K'iche'. It is here that 7 women formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Las Rosas de Chicaman."

They are hoping to grow their businesses of small restaurants, animal husbandry and selling traditional clothes. Their goal is to eradicate poverty for their families. They are applying for their 1st Kiva loan.

One member, who has a 3rd grade education, is 31-year-old Matilde. She sells traditional clothing and also has a sewing machine to create beautiful blouses called “huipiles” with local designs. Matilde is requesting a loan to buy fabric, as well as belts, shawls and blouses.

She shares, "I have had my business for 6 years. I opened it with the purpose of helping my husband with the household expenses and for providing a good life for my 3 children (6-12 years old). The profits generated by my business are used to cover the basic expenses of the house and also send my children to kindergarten, 3rd and 5th grades!"

Thanks to the helping hands of Kiva investors and Friendship Bridge, a strong partnership is created that provides women, like Matilde, with education, health care services and micro-loans through the "Microcredit Plus" program. With this support they can look forward to a brighter and more empowered future.
