Salume's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to purchase more cooking oil, soap and sugar.

Salume's story

Salume is 21 years old and lives in the town of Aduku in the Lira region of Uganda. She is married and has 2 children with 1 of them currently in school. For the past 4 years, Salume has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells cooking oil, soap and sugar.

To help expand her business, Salume has requested a loan of 500,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more cooking oil, soap and sugar, and will help Salume to generate greater profits.

Salume will use the profits made by the business in assisting her husband to pay school fees for their children, buying for them school requirements and providing basic needs for her family like food thereby improving on their standards of living.

Salume hopes that in the future she will be able to educate all her children so that the family can stand strong.

Salume is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
