Danaya Group's story

The members of the group Danaya are married women who are on average 28 years old and have three children. They live with their husbands and children in large traditional families in the village of Konovougou, district of Barouéli, region of Ségou, Republic of Mali. They met through being neighbors as well as a shared interest in retail. They sell various products in order to take care of certain spending needs of their families. They women just began to collaborate with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso in order to have a constant financial support for their activities. They are on their first group loan and will use it to purchase fruits, vegetables and a large quantity of cereals/grains for restaurants. These products are purchased on site and in surrounding villages and are re-sold a the market or on the side of the road to a clientele composed of both women and men. They hope to each make a monthly profit of approximately 20,000 FCFA [approximately 45 USD] that will be spent on food, health products and other activities.
