A loan helped to buy an extensive assortment of traditional clothing.

María's story

Doña María is an outstanding entrepreneur, a long-time widow, 64 years old with grown children, and a 6th-grade education. She lives in Santa Catarina Ixtahuacán. When she was very young, her mother taught her to weave and embroider traditional Guatemalan blouses. For many years she has had a business selling the traditional clothing she makes plus similar items that she buys.

María has completed 4 cycles of the Namaste Creating Prosperity Program and is now entering the Starz Program. For 2-3 years, high potential women receive intensive coaching in business, leadership, and empowerment, and get an appropriately sized business loan. Credit is not generally available to women with businesses of this size, so the loan is a vital program element.

During her previous cycles, she learned how to control her expenses, to reinvest in her business, and to save for old age. She has bought land and built a home. She now invests a little at a time in coffee growing land and sells the beans. She will use her loan to buy an extensive assortment of traditional clothing and will be selling more in other communities, hiring others to make some of the sales. She is looking forward to learning more new ways to improve and advance her business.

When she started with Namaste, she had a monthly net profit of 3,560 Guatemalan Quetzales. At the end of cycle 4, this had increased to Q 16,830. She is projecting this to rise to Q 20,630 by the end of the Starz program.
