A loan helped a female entrepreneur create a pop-up store, purchase inventory and build her website for an inclusive beauty business.
Prior to launching my startup, YHUE Beauty, I was a regional manager at a leading real estate tech company. I started out as a mid-level sales associate and was quickly promoted to a regional manager after selling over $300 million dollars worth of real estate within my first year. I was tasked with managing a remote team and increasing the sales rate in a market that traditionally had low activity. By the end of our first year in the market, we increased the sales rate by more than 200% and four of my employees were promoted. A huge accomplishment considering the number of obstacles that I had to overcome early on in life. Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, I shared a small two bedroom apartment with my mother, two siblings, and my sister’s three children. By eighteen I had become a part-time caregiver to my niece and two nephews following the untimely deaths of my mother, sister, and grandfather. Determined to succeed, I landed a full-time job and enrolled in a bachelor's degree program at St. John’s University. My weekends and summers were spent dreaming up plans to one day build an empire. My first introduction to the confidence-building effects of makeup came during my niece's junior-high-school prom when after a recent acne breakout, her face was left covered with scars. She and I took an hour-long ride to MAC Cosmetics to get her makeup done and it literally changed her life. As the makeup artist added the finishing touches on her look I watched my niece’s confidence grow. This is why I started YHUE Beauty, to give women within communities of color, which have been neglected by retailers such as Sephora and Ulta Beauty, access to the confidence-building effects of makeup that my niece experienced.
