A loan helped our Indoor Bike Park purchase 12 Eco-Powr, electricity generating stationary cycles for spin classes and finish renovating our fitness studio.
Pittsburgh wasn’t my first home, but it is for most of my extended family, so when it came time to relocate from Phoenix, it was an easy choice. My father and sister were born here and this is where I met my wife, so it really feels like home for me. My father introduced me to cycling at an early age, taking our family on a 17 kilometer ride through the countryside of Germany when I was 5 years old. Riding a bike has always seemed like a part of normal, everyday life, but it wasn’t until my late 20’s that I got more serious about training and racing. A few years prior I had become the first American to race in the Taiwan National Grand Prix for Motorcycles, and moving into competition was a natural transition for me. I made my living buying and renovating houses and never thought I would make a business around riding. However, once I had ridden the indoor bike park in Cleveland, I knew I could take my experience with real estate and construction to build a similar park here in Pittsburgh. It wasn’t until about a year into opening The Wheel Mill that I realised really just how much we could change people’s lives with cycling. From giving people a way to stay fit during our long winters, to providing an option for kids who don’t fit in with traditional ball sports, we kept hearing from people about how having The Wheel Mill available made their life better in some way. I’ll admit that my initial motivation for creating the park was my own love of riding, but now I wake up every day and think about what my gift to the world is going to be today!
