Chichicastenango, Departamento El Quiche, Quiché Department, Guatemala / Arts

Kairos Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy high quality thread in various colors for embroidery, as well as additional “fajas” to sell.

Kairos Group's story

The Treasurer of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Kairos” is 37 year old Micaela. She is single and lives with her parents in the department/state of Quiche, 145 km. from Guatemala City. Micaela is a talented artisan and embroiders colorful traditional belts or “fajas” that the ladies of her area use. With her income, she will help her parents meet their basic needs.

Micaela is requesting her 2nd KIVA loan to buy high quality thread in various colors, as well as additional “fajas” to sell. She is certain that by injecting capital into the business, she will be able to expand the business and attract new customers.

Although Micaela does not know how to read nor write, she learns a great deal from her monthly educational training. Along with the other 6 Maya K’iche members of the group, she learns about how to manage her business (planning, budgeting, investing, savings), and care for herself and her parents (health, hygiene, nutrition). This effective combination of loans, education and healthcare services is called “Microcredit Plus”.

The ladies in the group hold their heads a little higher each week, especially at the local markets as they offer their traditional textiles and chickens for sale. They are motivated, committed and thank Kiva investors for their generosity!
