Las Artesanas Group's story

Seven Maya K’iche ladies, members of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Artesanas” live in the department/state of Quiché, an area full of mountains, valleys and beautiful vistas. They have come together to request their 3rd Kiva loan to invest in their businesses and cover their household expenses. They sell fruit, vegetables, corn and beans. Some raise chickens.

Tomasa, a 66 year old widow, buys and sells basic grains, corn and beans. She is the mother of 9 children who range in age from 24-45 and was able to send each to school. It is important to Tomasa to be a good role model for her family and she works hard every day. She is requesting a Kiva loan to buy sacks of corn and 3 kinds of beans (black, white, red).

Tomasa and her friends benefit greatly from their participation in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and healthcare services. Tomasa is a good example of someone who has learned a great deal in her monthly educational training. She has confidence, self esteem and is a successful business woman. She has learned about effective business practices, health, hygiene, nutrition and the use of medicinal plants.

The ladies in the Trust Bank send their gratitude to Kiva investors from all parts of the world for generously funding their loans!
