Estrellas Del Carmen Group's loan finished fundraising, but these other borrowers need your support

A loan helped to buy threads of different colors and another loom.

Estrellas Del Carmen Group's story

In the rural areas of Sololá, eight women have come together to form the “Estrellas de Carmen” Trust Bank. They make artisan crafts, prepare tortillas, and run convenience stores. They’re proud to have their own businesses, generating incomes for their families and strengthening their independence. This Trust Bank has already completed five Kiva loans and excitedly seeks its sixth!

One of the Trust Bank’s members, Maria, has a weaving business, using a backstrap loom to create beautiful “huipiles,” or traditional Mayan blouses. With this Kiva loan, Maria plans to invest in threads of different colors and another loom so she can weave more blouses. She dreams of one day opening her own store and weaving a wide variety of products. Her earnings could help her afford schooling for her children and improve her family’s quality of life.

Maria and the other ladies have grown as entrepreneurs in part thanks to Friendship Bridge, Kiva’s field partner. Through its Microcredit Plus program, Friendship Bridge provides monthly training on business, health, and self-esteem, giving the women a strong foundation upon which they can succeed. Maria says, “Thanks to these lessons, my business has grown and has become more organized.” She notes how life has improved due to the skills she’s learned about budgeting, nutrition, and self-confidence.

Thanks to your support, these women can expand their horizons and pursue opportunities once unavailable to them and their families.
