Alicia's story

Alicia sells fish wholesale (in cans). Her relatives, fishermen who live in Tiquina (a community near the Titicaca Lake), supply her. Alicia’s routine starts on Monday when she travels to Tiquina at four in the morning to buy the fish that she can at a lower price because her relatives are the providers. She returns in the afternoon and leaves a major part of the merchandise with her customers in the city of El Alto. They sell the fish by the unit. During the week from Tuesday to Thursday, she gets up a five in the morning to arrive in the city of El Alto at 7:30 to collect for her merchandise. In the afternoons she takes care of her two little ones, who still do not go to school. She also helps her husband, who works as a bricklayer. He works close to home. The area where they live is getting more populated, and he is never without work.
