Integridad Group's story

The seven Maya K'iche' members of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Integridad” are beginning their fourth loan cycle with Kiva. The women are requesting loans to invest in their businesses of weaving and embroidering traditional blouses (“huipiles”), skirts (“cortes”), and a variety of textiles. Most of the women have between 3rd and 6th grade educations. They live in the Department of Quiché, which borders México in an area called "Land of Cloudscapes".

Manuela, 28 years old, is single and a member of the group. Although she only has a 3rd grade education, she does her accounting very well. Manuela lives with her grandmother, parents and four siblings, all over the age of 27. They have an adobe home with a kitchen and three other rooms made of cement block. Manuela and her family make and sell blouses and skirts that are woven both on wooden floor looms and backstrap looms. Manuela is requesting a loan to buy a variety of cotton and German thread, as well as silk, polyester and nylon thread. This variety of threads will augment the production of her traditional fabrics.

Manuela participates in the "Microcredit Plus" program that combines small loans, education and health, and benefits more than 28,000 Friendship Bridge clients. The monthly educational sessions have helped Manuela to make sound business decisions, as well as helping to educate her family with advice on health, hygiene, and finances. All have created an empowered family!

Thank you Kiva investors!
