Mujeres Benditas Group's story

The Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Benditas” is located in the Guatemalan Department of Sololá - home of the beautiful Lake Atitlan. There are seven members who speak Kaqchikel and with great pride wear their traditional outfits of embroidered blouses, wrap-around skirts and elaborate belts. The women are excited to begin their first loan cycle with Kiva and look forward to infusing new capital into their businesses selling clothing for men and shoes, as well as embroidering fabric by hand and machine to be sold in their local market place.

A member of the group is 44-year-old Ana, who is single, lives with her parents and has a third grade education. She, her parents and siblings live in a five-room adobe home.

Ana has created a workshop to machine embroider traditional blouses. It takes her about a half hour to travel along the highway to buy raw materials for her products. With the loan Ana is requesting, she plans to buy accessories, thread tools, glossy silk fabric, spangles, needles, oil, scissors, a tape measure and ruler.

Ana shares that she has benefited greatly from the Friendship Bridge "Microcredit Plus" program for small loans, education and healthcare services. She says the lessons in controlling expenses, self-esteem and keeping a clean house have helped her immensely.

Ana thanks Kiva investors for supporting her and providing her with an opportunity to have a brighter future!
