Luis's story

My name is Luis Raimundo Burés Martínez, I am 35 years old. After acquiring my Industrial Engineering degree, my goal was to apply this knowledge in agriculture in order to collaborate in the economy of my country. I started off as an advisor of a group of farmers in the Municipality of Coamo. After a year of research and developing the business structure for a business proposal, one of the farmers of the team suggested to terminate my position as an administrator and distribute my tasks other farmers. Without money and only my degrees, I began to work in the manufacturing industry with the goal to get the necessary capital to build my agriculture business. After a thorough research in hydroponic business, I coincidentally found a business in Coamo and when I called the owner I found out he was the farmer that terminated my services a few years before. He was retired of the business due to health conditions, and finally gave me the opportunity to achieve my goal as an entrepreneur in the hydroponic business. With the investment of all my savings, I was able to use my business as an experimental facility to teach others about hydroponics, with excellent results. This project helped my family and I unite forces and give us hope for a new beginning and a new perspective of life. All of them became an important part of our project, working in our facilities every day. Merely seven months after reaching our goal, Hurricane Maria devastated our island, our business included. My savings and all our efforts were lost, but we are still positive and eager to start over. Inspired by my previous results and the understanding that God has a purpose for this and every situation, I start again in a new facility from nothing but my dreams and hopes.
