Consolata

Nyahururu, Nyandarua County, Kenya / Agriculture

Consolata's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to purchase farming inputs such as high-nutrient fertilizers and certified seeds to improve her farm yield and make more profits from her sales to support her family.

Consolata's story

Consolata (pictured in the background while the loan officer takes a selfie with her) is an ambitious smallholder farmer from the Nyahururu area of Kenya, which is an abundant maize-producing region in the central province of Kenya.

Despite adversities, she just smiles. Consolata is a very hardworking and self-driven mother. She is known in her village for her undying and resilient nature.

In Kenya, agriculture is one of the most competitive industries, especially due to the high costs of operations necessary to improve farming. Such costs include the cost of land acquisition and inputs that have always been high.

To meet the high costs of inputs, farmers have been forced to borrow from financial institutions that sometimes impose very complicated procedures.

When Consolata learned about Juhudi and Kiva from a Juhudi Kilimo loan officer, she became interested in the good work that Kiva does to support small-holder farmers. Consolata is happy to have access to reliable micro-finance. At her farm, she keeps dairy cows and grows various crops. The main challenge that this enterprising woman has often complained of is the high cost of farming inputs in her area.

Therefore, she is borrowing this loan to purchase farming inputs such as high-nutrient fertilizers and certified seeds to improve her farm yield and make more profits from sales to support her family. Lenders, if there is someone you should lend to, then that person is Consolata. She will not let you down
