A loan helped to buy renewable energy products that will benefit her family’s health.

Katete 8 Group's story

Bridget is a farmer in a rural area in eastern Zambia. She’s 40 years old, married, and has five children. She dreams of growing her farming business but says finding good market prices for her produce can be challenging.

She currently uses firewood for cooking fuel, and it generates a lot of smoke while she’s cooking. Now she’s buying a cookstove that comes with a monthly supply of clean-burning fuel pellets, and she says she’s looking forward to cooking without harming her family’s health!

In addition to a stove and fuel pellets, one member of this group is also buying a solar system that includes three bright lights and a phone-charging port.

By purchasing these products, Bridget and Katete 8 group are participating in an innovative pigeon pea program. Farmers receive seeds and training for growing pigeon peas – a crop that is well suited to the dry conditions of eastern Zambia, naturally improves soil fertility through nitrogen fixation, and provides income and protein. After harvest, the farmers trade waste plant stalks (for recycling into fuel pellets for the stoves) as well as pigeon peas with Emerging Cooking Solutions as payment for their renewable energy products.
