Dairy Quality Assurance Lab's story

This loan may have higher risk but higher impact. Learn more here. The Problem: In Rwanda, dairy farmers often have their milk rejected by processors because it is contaminated with high amounts of bacteria. This results in high milk spoilage or losses, as farmers are not able to meet quality standards. Because of this, farmers often sell their milk in local markets, for prices far below what they could be earning. Solution and Impact: Dairy Quality Assurance Laboratory (DQAL) is the only private milk quality laboratory in Rwanda. They provide milk quality testing and training on milk quality standards to farmers. This directly allows them to meet quality standards and sell their milk for higher prices. About 2,560 farmers currently benefit from DQAL's services and are able to supply their milk to processors. By accessing higher prices, farmers are able to grow their businesses, and in turn are able to pay school fees and medical insurance for their families. Loan Use: This loan will be used to buy lab equipment that will increase the scope of tests that DQAL is able to provide, as well as increase efficiency and accuracy. This will grow the number of farmers that have access to the market for their milk, as well as create additional job opportunities for local Rwandans in the lab.
