A loan helped re-establish my farm and recover everything we've lost in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
10 years ago I made the decision to learn about hydroponic crops. I remember that I started in a very small space in my home, where I had my first lettuces. At that time in my country, hydroponic crops weren't very common so it was a bit difficult for me to find information about the hydroponic systems on the island, everything I could find was from the internet. As the months went by I was able to contact a non-profit that offered courses in hydroponic systems, and I made the decision to take the course and finally got certified in Traditional and Modern Agriculture. Since then, I started to practice on a larger scale in a site where I stored my tools and where I was able to apply what I had learned. There, I had with my first clients who were my neighbors and friends. I saw that as a great business opportunity and that's when I decided to start building a bigger ship. We acquired a rope and a half and hydroponic ships of 3500 plants that were composed of 5 tables of 700 plants. Our crops were able to provide to a restaurant in the area and members of the community. But everything changed drastically in the wake of Hurricane Maria. I lost everything after 10 years of hard work. It was hard to see how everything can be lost in a moment; I lost all my tables and crops. I would like to be able to restore my farm to be self-sustainable.
