A loan helped buy more seeds and fertilizer for her crops.

Bella Vista Sumpango Group's story

In the state/department of Chimaltenango live eight women who have organized themselves into the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, “Bella Vista Sumpango.” These women have their own businesses growing and selling vegetables and making the traditional handmade textiles of Guatemala. They are beginning their third loan cycle with Kiva.

Lorenza is a 43-year-old married woman with two daughters. They are 22 and 18 years old and both attended school but did not graduate from high school. Unlike her daughters, Lorenza did not complete even one year of schooling. She has her own business growing and selling vegetables like tomatoes and radishes. With this loan, she will buy more seeds and fertilizer for her crops.

This Trust Bank is part of Friendship Bridge’s “Microcredit Plus” program that works to empower women through the combination of microloans, health services, and non-formal education. Each month during their monthly repayment meetings, the women learn about topics such as hygiene, finances, women’s rights, and family life. Lorenza has benefited from these meetings since she can compensate for her lack of schooling by learning about budgeting and gain business skills to better provide for her family.

These women say thank you to Kiva’s lenders for their support!
