A loan helped provide the startup money required to create a freestanding center for naturopathic medicine in Brooklyn including light construction, signage, technology, utilities, rent money, and furniture for the treatment and waiting rooms.

Maria's story

I founded Brooklyn Natural Medicine because Brooklyn feels like home to me. My family and I immigrated to New York City from the Soviet Union in the early 90s. We lived here in my early childhood. Returning to this city to do the work that I love after completing naturopathic medical school in Portland, Oregon has been a dream. Last year, I was the first graduate of a naturopathic medical school to complete a residency program in the state of the New York. I have continued to see patients at a busy Manhattan clinic in addition to teaching as an adjunct professor while starting my private practice in Brooklyn. Brooklyn Natural Medicine began in a small practice room in Prospect Heights situated between a flower shop and a yoga studio. Happily, I have watched my schedule fill up there over the course of several months. I attribute this to the strong community in Brooklyn and to the apparent need for board-licensed naturopathic doctors in the city of New York. Brooklyn Natural Medicine serves artists, academics, freelancers, and small business owners. All are welcome inclusive of gender, age, race, sexual orientation, size, ability, culture, of religious beliefs. At this point, I need to focus my attention on one cohesive, welcoming, and warm space for my practice. The desired Fort Greene location is perfect for this endeavor. Fort Greene is a hub for natural wellness with acupuncture, massage, and pilates centers within walking distance. Fort Greene is accessible to the rest of Brooklyn, to Manhattan, and the outer boroughs by train because of its proximity to the Barclay Center. Having this location would propel my practice to the next level.
