A loan helped to expand her business buying huipiles.

Pureza 3 Group's story

Petrona is 42 years old. She says that she has been blessed with her parents, because they loved her a lot, and they gave her what she needed. They supported her for studying, despite that her parents were illiterate. Petrona got her education as a school teacher.

She got information from her aunt about the opportunity of getting credit from Chajulense Association of Women United for Life. She was afraid and she did not feel comfortable until she talked with an association promoter; she gave her all the credit details.

With her first credit (loan), she began selling huipiles; her second credit she will use to expand her business activity, buying huipiles to sell at the market. She is really pleased with her activity, because she not only has received the benefit of getting a better income for her family, but she has given job opportunities to others.

Petrona is the leader of Pureza Group 3. The group is comprised of six women, all from the Ixil Maya ethnicity. The group will use their loan for textiles 50%, retail 33% and transportation 17%. On average, each member of the group has two children. The average age of the members of the group is 47 years old, 33% are illiterate, 33% did not finish their primary education, and 34% ended their secondary education.
