Mary's story

Mary is 20 years old and lives in the town of Kasangati in a region of Uganda. She is single and has one child, who is currently in school. For the past two years, Mary has been working hard to manage her soft drinks business selling soda and water.

To help expand her business, Mary has requested a loan of 500,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to stock more soda, water and juice, and will help Mary to generate greater profits. From the higher profits, Mary will be able to afford basic needs at home, improve on her standard of living, and also care for her child. Mary hopes that in the future she will be able to to open a strong wholesale business.

Mary is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life skills training.
