Asia's story

Asia is 20 years old and lives in the town of Makindye in the Makindye region of Uganda. She is single and has one child.

For the past three years, Asia has been working hard to manage her laundry business, which washes clothes for money. To help expand her business, Asia has requested a loan of 800,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy a washing machine. This will help Asia to generate greater profits; business will expand and profits will increase. Asia will be in position to improve the standard of living and also pay the respective school dues for her child. Asia hopes that in the future, she will be able to to expand the business and buy washing machines as well.

Asia is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
