Jane's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped buy the materials to construct a workshop where I can make art, furniture and custom creations using recycled and salvaged materials. It would also allow me to store and ship products, buy tools and equipment and advertise my company.

Jane's story

I am originally from Scotland and was born and spent the first 18 years of my life in Glasgow. Although I am fiercely proud of my heritage and my country, I was desperate to leave behind a chaotic and turbulent childhood, and the painful memories of being raised in a violent and abusive environment. I was fortunate enough to be able to emigrate to the United States in 1998 and created a new life for myself in California. My lifelong love of fitness lead me to become a certified personal fitness trainer in 2000, beginning my career in San Francisco and then later opening my own fitness facility in 2006. Due to changes in zoning requirements, the gym sadly closed it's doors after 10 years of business. Disheartened, I re-evaluated my goals and my dreams and decided to focus on my other love, which has always been art. I've been an artist my whole life and although I studied photography, I am a self taught painter, sculptor and furniture maker. I also make lighting decorations, fences and decking with all the materials used being either salvaged or recycled. I love making something out of "nothing" - not only is it hugely rewarding, but it promotes the earth-friendly movement. Most of my materials would otherwise have gone to a land-fill. I adopted a minimalist lifestyle a few years ago and live very happily off-grid in my own tiny house in the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains where I also create my art. My dream for the future is to build my reputation as an artist and to unite artisans who follow an eco-friendly approach. I would love to create an artists working community some day, offer classes to the community in art, green construction and recycling programs.
