Gwen & Alison's story

I am Gwen, the Farmer-Owner of Coriander Kitchen and Farm. I have been growing vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and cut flowers in Detroit for the past 10 years. Nothing gives me more joy than people eating the goods from our farm! For me, farming is about creating an ecosystem: planting a wide variety of crops that can be eaten, enjoyed in a bouquet, or that attract beneficial insects onto the farm to balance against the pests and weeds. My Nanny and Poppy instilled the joy of growing food in me, and they delighted my palate in eating their own harvest, especially in their strawberry patch. Those memories continue to inspire my work as a farmer today. My goal is to create a profitable, sustainable, and diversified farm that grows for the Coriander Kitchen, but also other restaurants in the city. My business partner, Alison is the Chef-Owner of Coriander Kitchen and Farm. She has been cooking and growing her whole life, thanks to a culinarily curious mother and a father raised on Northern Michigan farms. She started her professional journey working in community education, teaching nutrition through culinary and agriculture programs. She loved the techniques and skills of growing and cooking and found innate acumen she wished to hone. Alison left non-profit work for farms/restaurants to build her capacity. Raised on homegrown, fresh foods she is aware that they are greatly needed in American communities. She desires to feed people food that nourishes their bodies, palate, and the environment in which we all live. Today, she is proud that this is what we do, that with every meal served, more people experience this nourishment. Alison's dream is a Coriander Kitchen where she can be present each day for community and employees that seek the craft of honest food.
