Estrellas De Belen 2 Group's story

Las Estrellas de Belen 2, or the Stars of Belen 2, is a Friendship Bridge trust bank located in a rural area in the state of Sololá in Guatemala’s Western Highlands. The group's seven members, all women, have no formal education. They have businesses creating artisan crafts, embroidering cloth and weaving traditional Maya blouses, or huipiles, and elaborate belts, or fajas. They are in their first loan cycle with Kiva.

Santos, 35, has never attended school. She is married and has five children. The eldest child is 19, the youngest is six years old. Three of the children have not attended school, and the other two have gone as far as the third and sixth grades, respectively. Santos has a weaving business, making colorful huipiles and fajas. She is requesting a loan to buy a variety of colorful threads and yarns at wholesale prices.

The women in this trust bank meet once a month to make payments on their loans and participate in educational training as part of Friendship Bridge's Microcredit Plus program of loans, education and healthcare services. The ladies have the opportunity to gain valuable business skills and to learn about health and family matters and about how to empower themselves.

The partnership between Friendship Bridge and Kiva is helping these group members support themselves and their families. Thank you, Kiva investors, for your kindness in funding these much needed loans loans.
