Makeni's Best Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy organic rice from a local producer in Makeni, thus supporting sustainable local farmers while scaling up each member's business.

Makeni's Best Group's story

sincerely Esther, from the Makeni's Best trader group, would sincerely like to thank all Kiva lenders for their first loan. It enabled the group to break free from the local lenders who were charging them nearly 100 per cent interest. As a result, all group members have fully recovered their businesses, repaid their first loans and are successfully trading again after the devastation of Ebola.

Mountain Lion Agriculture recently posted on its website an update on the success of this and similar Kiva-supported trader groups: http://mlbr.org/mountain-lion-and-kiva-partnership-a-success-positive-results-from-2017-research/

The group is now seeking a smaller second loan to expand on their progress. In Sierra Leone, food access is an issue, and there has been huge demand for the locally grown rice that the group is selling. With this second Kiva loan, group members will greatly increase their stock and distribution capabilities. Their profits will be used to ensure that the children of all members go to school and to create a support fund for young female trader trainees.
