Cacao De Aroma's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!
A loan helped 890 rural farming families to increase their income by exporting cacao instead of coca paste for cocaine.
Cacao De Aroma's story
This is Cacao de Aroma’s second loan on Kiva. Their first Kiva loan was successfully repaid. The loan increased the amount of cacao they could purchase from rural families to 650 tons. Now, Cacao de Aroma wants to further increase the amounts of cacao they can buy from small farmers to 1100 tons and increase farmers income by 30%. Problem Rural peruvian farmers are poor and disconnected from global markets. Buyers take advantage of this and buy their crops at much lower prices than that of the market. This is especially true of the Tocache region’s which once was a major shipping point for coca paste to Colombia to be refined as cocaine. Solution With support from Peru’s National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs DEVIDA, Cooperativa Agraria Central de Cacao de Aroma (Cacao de Aroma) focuses on processes that include uniform post-harvest fermentation. By joining this Coop, farmers can access a regulated market, finance, and sell their cacao into specialty, Organic and Fair Trade markets. Impact Since 2014, Cacao de Aroma has managed to gather over 890 member families to sell their cacao to the coop. The first batches sold as Cacao de Aroma have allowed rural farmers to increase their income near 30% by the achieved price difference.
